Airport to trailhead - getting from a Norwegian airport to a hiking start
Norway's iconic trails are reachable by public transport from four main airports - Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Bodø. Here's the route, time, and cost from each airport to the nearest classic hike.

Norway’s four “hiking-airport” combinations: Stavanger → Preikestolen, Bergen → Trolltunga, Oslo → Besseggen, Bodø → Lofoten. All four are doable by public transport. None require a rental car if you plan around the schedules. Total transit time from arrival to trailhead is 2-6 hours depending on combination.

At a glance
| Airport | Trail | Transit time | One-way cost | Public transport? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stavanger (SVG) | Preikestolen | 2 h | NOK 280 | Yes - flybus + ferry + bus |
| Bergen (BGO) | Trolltunga | 5 h | NOK 700 | Yes - train + bus + shuttle |
| Oslo (OSL) | Besseggen | 4-5 h | NOK 600 | Yes - bus to Gjendesheim |
| Bodø (BOO) | Lofoten (Reine) | 5 h | NOK 750 | Yes - ferry + bus to Moskenes |
| Bodø (BOO) | Lofoten (Svolvær) | 4 h | NOK 1,100 | Yes - express ferry |
| Ålesund (AES) | Romsdalseggen | 3 h | NOK 450 | Yes - bus to Åndalsnes |
Stavanger → Preikestolen
The simplest of the four. Most international visitors do this combination.
| Stage | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SVG → Stavanger ferry terminal | 30 min | NOK 130 | Flybus runs every 30 min |
| Ferry to Tau | 40 min | NOK 60 | Frequent in summer |
| Bus Tau → Preikestolhytta | 35 min | NOK 90 | Connects to ferries |
| Total | ~2 h | ~NOK 280 |
Practical:
- Last bus back from Preikestolhytta is around 18:00 in summer - do not miss it
- Most hikers stay 1 night at Preikestolhytta or Preikestolen Mountain Lodge to start fresh
- Buy bus + ferry combo ticket from Kolumbus to save 15%
Bergen → Trolltunga
The longest of the four “iconic-hike” combinations. Plan for an overnight in Odda.
| Stage | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BGO → Bergen central | 25 min | NOK 130 | Bybanen light rail |
| Bergen → Voss (train) | 1 h 15 min | NOK 350 | Bergen Railway, scenic |
| Voss → Odda (bus) | 2 h 30 min | NOK 220 | NOR-WAY bus, 2x daily |
| Odda → P2 Skjeggedal | 30 min | shuttle / taxi | NOK 100 shuttle, runs hourly summer |
| Total | ~5 h | ~NOK 700 | Plan for overnight in Odda |
Practical:
- Bergen Railway tickets cheapest at Vy.no, 2 weeks ahead
- Odda has hostels, hotels, and one DNT-affiliated cabin near the trailhead
- The shuttle from Odda to Skjeggedal is the only realistic transport up - driving costs more in tolls than the shuttle itself
Oslo → Besseggen
The classic Jotunheimen day-walk approach.
| Stage | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| OSL → Oslo S (train) | 22 min | NOK 130 | Flytoget |
| Oslo S → Otta (train) | 3 h 15 min | NOK 350 | Vy regional |
| Otta → Gjendesheim (bus) | 1 h 30 min | NOK 150 | NOR-WAY summer service |
| Total | ~5 h | ~NOK 630 |
Practical:
- Combined train + bus ticket from Vy saves NOK 50-100
- Gjendesheim has a DNT staffed cabin - book in advance for July
- The morning Besseggen ferry from Gjendesheim is at 09:00 and 11:00 in summer
Bodø → Lofoten
The most expensive transit, but the only way to reach Lofoten without a long drive from Tromsø or a flight to Leknes/Svolvær.
Bodø → Reine (south Lofoten - Reinebringen, Bunes Beach)
| Stage | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BOO → Bodø terminal | 5 min | NOK 50 | Walk or bus |
| Ferry to Moskenes | 3 h 15 min | NOK 350 | 4x daily summer, book ahead |
| Bus Moskenes → Reine | 15 min | NOK 50 | Local bus, runs with ferry arrivals |
| Total | ~5 h | ~NOK 750 | Ferry is the bottleneck |
Bodø → Svolvær (north Lofoten)
| Stage | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bodø → Svolvær express ferry | 3 h 30 min | NOK 1,000 | Hurtigruten Speedferries |
| Total | ~4 h | ~NOK 1,100 | Faster but pricier |
Practical:
- Book Bodø-Moskenes ferry vehicle space weeks ahead in July; foot-passenger is usually walk-up
- Lofoten itself has a working bus network connecting all major villages, but services are infrequent (1-4 per day)
- A rental car becomes useful in Lofoten after the ferry - distances between trailheads are larger than the map suggests
Ålesund → Romsdalseggen
The least-known but most efficient combination if Romsdalseggen is your target.
| Stage | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| AES → Ålesund central | 30 min | NOK 100 | Flybus |
| Ålesund → Åndalsnes (bus) | 2 h | NOK 250 | NOR-WAY 681 |
| Åndalsnes → Vengedalen (shuttle) | 30 min | NOK 100 | Trail-specific shuttle |
| Total | ~3 h | ~NOK 450 |
Practical:
- The Rauma Railway from Dombås to Åndalsnes is one of Norway’s best train rides if you’re coming from Oslo instead - different combination, longer (5+ h), but worth it for the railway itself
- Åndalsnes hosts the Norwegian Mountaineering Centre and has good budget accommodation
Multi-region trips - the bottlenecks
If you’re doing two regions in one trip:
| Combination | Bottleneck | Best fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fjords + Lofoten | Bergen → Bodø flight | Book SAS or Norwegian 6+ weeks ahead, NOK 1,200-2,500 |
| Fjords + Jotunheimen | Bergen → Otta train | Bergen Railway has 2x daily, plan one full transit day |
| Lofoten + Tromsø | Coastal ferry vs flight | Hurtigruten coastal voyage if you have time, otherwise flight Bodø → Tromsø |
Common questions
Do I need to rent a car?
Almost never for the iconic day-hikes. Yes for Lofoten exploration beyond Reine, and yes for Hardangervidda multi-day if you want flexibility. No otherwise.
Can I do everything on a Eurail / Interrail pass?
Norwegian trains are covered. NOR-WAY buses and most local buses are not. Most trail-shuttles are not. Useful for the Bergen Railway and Rauma Railway segments; not for the last-mile.
Are airport transfers reliable in winter?
Yes - Norwegian airports run on heavy weather. The bottlenecks shift to local roads after snowstorms; build in 24 hours of buffer if your hike is weather-dependent and your trip is short.
Best public transport apps?
Vy.no for trains. En-Tur for everything else (buses, ferries, multi-modal). Most show real-time delays.
Should I buy tickets on arrival or in advance?
Trains: 2+ weeks ahead, savings of 30-50%. Ferries (especially Bodø-Moskenes vehicle): book ahead. Local buses: walk-up is fine. Trail shuttles: book day before.
